Ocean to Ice Day 17
Cape Arago — Oregon Coast
I stopped and listened in the wind for a minute. Trees swayed overhead, then seals barking faintly in the distance. They sounded like they were having a great time, so I headed toward the noise.
At first I didn’t see anything except waves crashing against dark rock ledges crowded with pelicans and gulls. Then a wave broke and suddenly a seal launched out the back of it. After that, I couldn’t stop seeing them.
Within minutes the whole scene felt alive.
What had looked ordinary at first suddenly felt charged with meaning.
What I’m Learning
Part I of 1 Nephi 11 addressed how the trail may become less about spectacular views and more about learning how to truly see.
Yesterday I thought about another aspect of 1 Nephi 11.
Nephi feels incredibly normal right before something incredibly abnormal happens.
He’s not presented as glowing.
Not superhuman.
Not some legendary yogi floating three inches above the desert floor.
He’s a young guy in the wilderness trying to make sense of what his father saw.
And honestly, the text almost undersells the setup:
“I sat pondering in mine heart…”
That’s it.
No dramatic ritual.
No weird dance around a fire.
No “I ascended into the heavens through seven levels of transcendence.”
He sits.
He thinks.
He desires to understand.
He believes God can answer.
Then everything changes.
That matters.
Because I don’t think this lesson of 1 Nephi 11 is:
“If you pray hard enough, you’ll be teleported onto mountains and shown visions.”
I think this lesson is:
“God responds to sincere seekers far more than most people realize.”
The form of the answer varies.
The relationship is the point.
For Nephi, the answer came as a vision because Nephi’s calling required it.
For most people, the answers come quieter:
a realization on a trail
a scripture suddenly feeling alive
strange timing
clarity arriving while driving
courage appearing when it shouldn’t
a feeling that something matters
a moment where creation suddenly feels charged with meaning
Honestly, a lot of my Oregon Coast experiences already fit that category.
Not because I am “special.”
But because awe, solitude, pondering, prayer, beauty, uncertainty, and attention seem to create conditions where people actually notice God.
That has been one of the recurring themes of Ocean to Ice so far.
The more I experience this journey, the less accidental these moments start to feel.
Not forced.
Not manufactured.
But noticed.
Like sincere seeking and attention change the way people move through the world.
Also—and this is important—Nephi’s vision centers on Christ very quickly.
The answer is Jesus.
And maybe that’s another lesson hidden in the chapter:
Sometimes we ask for explanations…
…and God responds with a person.
Not:
“Here is the schematic of the universe.”
But:
“Look at Him.”
Trail Line
God responds to sincere seekers far more than most people realize.
